The story begins in Earthrealm, focusing on Kung Lao and Raiden, two farmhands and martial artists living in a quiet village in Fengjian Province. They often visit Madam Bo’s teahouse, a peaceful place they enjoy. One day, the Lin Kuei warriors come to the teahouse to extort Madam Bo. During the confrontation, one of the warriors, Smoke, attacks Madam Bo and knocks her out. Kung Lao and Raiden step in to protect her, fighting back against the Lin Kuei.
After defeating most of the attackers, they face Sub-Zero and Scorpion in a tough battle. During the fight, Kung Lao discovers he can use his hat as a weapon, while Raiden shows off his own skills. Together, they manage to defeat the Lin Kuei.
As the dust settles, Lord Liu Kang, the God of Fire and Protector of Earthrealm, appears. He explains that the Lin Kuei were working for him and that this entire fight was a test of their abilities. Impressed by their skills, he invites them to join the Wu Shi Academy to train further. After some hesitation, Kung Lao and Raiden agree, and Liu Kang reveals that they are just the first of many he plans to recruit.
