Johnny Cage finds himself exploring an ancient temple with his friend Adam, in a clear nod to Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The duo avoids most of the traps but is soon attacked by monsters called Kalima. After defeating them, Adam destroys a bridge leading to the throne of the temple’s undead guardian, Katara Vala. As Johnny grabs Katara Vala’s shield, he wakes up, startling Adam, who accidentally falls into liquid mercury and dies. Johnny then defeats the final guardian, only to reveal that it was all a movie set. He hopes this film will revive his failing career, but his director Steven (a playful reference to Steven Spielberg) doubts it and admits he only took on the project as a favor to Johnny, who is now struggling to stay relevant.
At home, Johnny’s wife, Cristina, tries to confront him about their financial troubles caused by his extravagant lifestyle, including their luxurious Malibu mansion and expensive antiques like the $3 million katana, Sento. Johnny dismisses her concerns, claiming that projecting success is the only way to regain it. Cristina, frustrated, tells him she married John Carlton, not the persona “Johnny Cage,” and she leaves, heartbroken and seemingly for good.
Soon after, Johnny’s house is broken into by Kenshi Takahashi, a Yakuza gangster who claims to be a descendant of the Taira clan and demands the return of Sento. When Johnny refuses, the two fight, with Johnny emerging victorious. After tying up Kenshi, Johnny learns about the Taira clan’s history—how they went into hiding centuries ago, changed their name to Takahashi, and joined the Bakuto (predecessors of the Yakuza) for protection. Still skeptical of Kenshi’s story, Johnny assumes he’s stalling for the police. When the doorbell rings, Johnny is surprised to find Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion at his doorstep. Thinking it’s a prank arranged by his wife, he brushes it off.
Liu Kang orders Sub-Zero to release Kenshi, but when Johnny grabs Bi-Han’s arm to protest, Bi-Han angrily slams him into a priceless artifact, breaking it. Furious, Johnny fights back, this time with full seriousness, and wins again. Liu Kang then reveals his divine identity as the God of Fire by igniting his body in flames, even triggering Johnny’s fire alarm. Finally convinced, Johnny questions why a god would choose him. Liu Kang explains that he sees potential in Johnny to rise above his circumstances and change the course of his life.
